About Us
The history of our company dates back to 1957, when a state-owned horticultural enterprise called PGO started out in the town of Pszczyna, Poland, as part of a larger organisation called Siedlice State Farms.
A decade later, PGO was spun off from Siedlice State Farms and started as an independent enterprise.
WZD, or Warzywniczy Zakład Doświadczalny (Vegetable Gardening Experimental Plant), was established in 1972 after the Research Institute for Vegetable Crops, Skierniewice, Poland, took control of PGO’s assets and Pszczyna State Farm. WZD began operation on July 1, 1972, as one of several experimental plants controlled by the Skierniewice institute.
In its early years, the company focused on scientific research in the field of vegetable gardening.
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, WZD began to grow fast, building a complex of 12 greenhouses (each covering an area of 1 hectare) for growing vegetables and flowers. Facilities for animals and vegetables were also added, including a cowshed, an enclosure for calves, silos, feed mixing facilities, barns and garages. An important project was the construction of a coal-powered heat-generating plant. Other projects at the time included residential blocks, offices, a hotel, a canteen, machine shops and vehicle repair shops.
WZD covered the area of about 250 hectares.
In 1999, WZD began a restructuring process. Due to financial difficulties, the company had to sell (e.g. its greenhouses) or lease out part of its assets. As a result, a few independent and successful companies began operation.
On August 1, 2002, a company named WZD Spółka z o.o. was established, covering an area of 45 hectares of land. Its offices are based in the town of Pszczyna, Poland.
The company is situated in the southwest part of the town, about 1.5 kms from the centre, and in the vicinity of Goczałkowice Reservoir.
The company’s core business is the generation and distribution of heat, supplying 13 greenhouses and facilities connected by a heating network. In generating heat, the company uses coal dust supplied by nearby coalmines.
In its grounds, the company has large resources of high purity-class groundwater. To be able to use these resources, an on-site water treatment station was built. The water is pumped into the municipal water supply system and sold for production purposes.
In 2003, WZD constructed a facility for manufacturing multiwall polycarbonate sheets, which are widely used in construction, gardening and many other areas.
In 2005, the company’s quality management system was certified to the ISO 9001:2000 standard with regard to the manufacture of plastic products for use in construction. The certification also applies to the collection, treatment and supply of water.
Thanks to its technical facilities and convenient and attractive location, the company has the resources to build new or extend its existing facilities for manufacturing use.
Today, WZD employs 36 people and plans to increase its head count following new investment projects in the near future.
